What’s Your Excuse Fitness is a private studio gym in Dublin 24 that offers the general public and clients with disabilities a safe space to train in. Owner and Personal Trainer Rob O’Byrne is a wheelchair user who is a qualified personal trainer and Ireland's first adaptive and inclusive trainer.
In 2005, at the age of seventeen, Robert had an accident while on holidays with family which changed his life forever. Rob dived into a swimming pool, hitting his head off the bottom and broke his neck, damaged his spinal cord and was left a C5 incomplete quadriplegic. It was only upon his return to Dublin that Robert learned that he had to be rescued and if there hadn’t been people at the side of the pool, he'd have drowned.
After over 9 months of rehabilitation in the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH), Robert decided to further his education and completed an Honours Degree in Business Management. Robert became the first in Ireland to receive a tendon transfer and after more months of rehabilitation following the operation, he returned to the gym only to realise that many personal trainers struggle to understand rehabilitation work for the disabled. Robert again decided to further his education and qualified as a gym instructor, personal trainer and TRX instructor.

Robert was inspired by the many ways people with different disabilities such as those in wheelchairs, the blind, people with brain injuries and people with stroke injuries can exercise. He built the What's Your Excuse Fitness Centre which includes adaptable, wheelchair-friendly exercise systems such as TRX, adjustable pulleys, weight bench with barbells, free weights, an electric plinth, an easy stand, and a boxing bag.
Rob creates personal training programs for disabled people and the general public so they can get the proper one-on-one attention that is required. Whether it's post hospital rehabilitation programs, weight loss programs, strength programs, muscle gain programs, mobility and flexibility programs, sports conditioning, or building confidence, they can be done in a relaxing and private space.
It doesn't matter if you're in Dublin or Donegal, Robs aim is to get you a suitable program, either in the fitness centre or from your home via online programs. Rob says "there are no more excuses not to get the right program and make a better life for yourself".
We look forward to seeing you on an evening of your choice, at the highly-rated Temple Grill family restaurant, in the heart of Templeogue Village.
